PURPOSE OF POSITION: To function as a professional respiratory therapist and able to apply theoretical knowledge to the care of infant child, adolescent and adult patients and clients. To demonstrate competence in respiratory skills, problem solving, critical thinking and priority setting. To recognize the need for professional growth and to take appropriate steps towards meeting educational needs
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Assesses patients, clients and families and recognizes normal parameters, deviations and abnormalities in physical, emotional, developmental and behavorial status as it relates to cardio-pulmonary needs using a family centered approach to care, plans and prioritizes care to meet patient, client and family needs
2. Demonstrates competence in the implementation of the technical skills required for the care of the patients. Clients and families according to CCHMC policies, procedures and standards.
3. Identifies goals and outcomes for health with the patient, client and family. Directs interventions towards the attainment of goals and outcomes as it relates to cardio pulmonary health.
4. Evaluates effectiveness of care.
5. Demonstrates critical thinking by making appropriate care decisions and relating that information to the healthcare team
6. Demonstrate compliance with established practices in documentation of care.
7. Demonstrate awareness of the value of research and evidence based practice in respiratory care.
8. Share leadership responsibilities in teamwork and care delivery.
9. Demonstrate competence in department specific knowledge, skills and behaviors.
10. Implement the standards of the patient care and access process initiative (PCAPI) in care delivery (Inpatient areas only).
11. Function as a leader and work collaboratively and interdependently with health team members.
12. Contribute to the growth of peers by sharing own knowledge, experience and skills.
13. Maintain currency in field through participating in patient care conferences, committee meetings, inservices, staff conferences, council activities, seminars and literature.
14. Identify and assume responsibility for learning needs. Integrate new knowledge into practice.
15. Comply with policies and procedures protecting patient rights for informed consent and the handling of confidential information as defined by Cincinnati Children's mission and applicable laws and regulations. Review timeliness, accuracy, availability and security of information.
16. Perform procedures, collect data, analyze data and make decisions regarding patient care, including initial screening, assessment, diagnosis, care, reassessment and modification of care.
17. Provide for the exchange of appropriate patient care and clinical information when patients are admitted, referred, transferred or discharged. Provide data which will contribute to the assessment of a patient's needs, the organization's capability to provide care or treatment and the appropriate level of care.
18. Participate in improving organizational performance through recommending areas or approaches for improvement activities, effectively implement new iniatives, collecting data and providing input to department discussions.
19. Ensure that work areas are organized and present a safe, accessible, effective and efficient environment for employees, patients and families. Attend required Cincinnati Children's training sessions, including radiation safety, laboratory safety, bloodborne pathogens and OSHA. Comply with Infection Control policies and procedures.
20. Ensure the continuous and timely availability of respiratory care services to patients.
21. Actively participates as a font line example of extraordinary customer service. Participates in customer service initiatives that are appropriate.
22. Demonstrate required competency in applying policies and procedures to the specific age group(s) served.
23. Understand, adhere to and model Core Standards as defined organizationally and specifically within the department/unit.
24. Perform other duties as assigned.
REQUIRED SKILLS: Effective verbal and interpersonal communication skills. Capable of relating to diverse age and demographic backgrounds. Demonstrate basic knowledge of the growth and development process of pediatric and adult patients and clients. Demonstrate competency in basic respiratory care practices and skills. Ability to adapt to stressful or crisis situations; capable of identifying strengths and weaknesses and seeking appropriate resources. Possess interest and willingness to broaden knowledge and skills in respiratory care practice. Demonstrate enthusiasm in providing family-centered care. Able to utilize available resources to broaden clinical skills and enhance professional growth. Must be experienced in setting priorities and participative management.

EDUCATION/WORK EXPERIENCE: Must be a graduate of an American Medical Association approved Respiratory Care Program. Must be registered or registry eligible by the National Board for Respiratory Care and licensed by the State of Ohio. Registry eligible therapists have 6 months to obtain the Registry credential and must show evidence of having scheduled the registry exam at time of hire. Kentucky and Indiana licenses may be required for specific positions
